Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PlayStation 5 has an optional 4K resolution / 60 frames per second performance mode, developer Insomniac Games has revealed.
As Digital Foundry reported earlier in July, Sony’s recent PS5 games reveal showcase suggested 30fps was a performance target for the majority of the company’s first-party offerings, including Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
“Sony kicked off its PS5 reveal with a short teaser for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – and the evidence suggests that developer Insomniac is sticking with the 30fps performance of the original game, even though the horsepower exists to double frame-rate to 60fps,” Digital Foundry chief Richard Leadbetter wrote.
While the news from Insomniac is welcome, many questions remain. For example, how will this performance mode differ from the alternative quality visuals mode? Probably no ray-tracing for starters. Here’s Leadbetter commenting on the news:
“This is a welcome announcement, users will be able to lean more into the CPU horsepower of the PS5 to deliver 60fps, and we’ll be interested to see what graphical trades were required to deliver the performance mode, especially as 4K resolution is suggested here – though lowering precision on ray tracing effects or dropping them altogether is a possibility. Whether this was an original design goal or a response to user feedback isn’t clear, but ultimately, giving players the choice in how to use the PS5’s power can only be a good thing.”
